Free and Low-Cost Legal Research: Home

Bar Membership Benefits

Nearly all State Bar Associations provide access to a low-cost legal research system as a member benefit.  The most common systems available through the state bars are Casemaker and FastCase.  Check with your state bar or look at this useful map to determine what you have access to.

Tips for Using Free/Low-Cost Options

  • Check content and coverage - These sources vary in what they provide.  Know what you're searching before you search.
  • Look for search tips - Search connectors are often different than those used in Lexis/Westlaw.  Becoming familiar with search syntax will help.
  • Love them for what they are - These sources aren't Lexis/Westlaw, otherwise you'd be paying much more to use them.  Realizing this can help eliminate frustration.
